After School Activities
As part of our holistic approach to education we recommend that all students get involved in at least one of the wide range of after school activities St Joseph of Cluny has to offer. Being involved in activities outside of the classroom has many potential benefits including: improved mental and physical wellbeing, better school grades, new friendships, learning new skills, understanding cooperation and increased confidence.

Choir and Orchestra

Choir
The St. Joseph of Cluny school choir is open to every student in the school with a desire to sing. No previous choral or musical experience is necessary. The choir is the heart beat of the school and it provides the students with an opportunity to sing and make friends with girls from other years and to excel in a co-curricular activity.
The choir gives each student confidence-building opportunities as it performs at most school events throughout the year inclduding the school mass, the Open Day and the Carol Service, one of the highlights of the year.
The choir also takes part in competitions, such as the Lyric FM Choir for Christmas Competition & The Wesley Interschools Music Festival.
The repertoire of the choir includes varied genres such as contemporary songs, Musical Theatre, classical songs and a vast selection of Christmas carols. The choir sings in 2-part and 3-part harmony.
Every year, the choir attends a show in the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre and learns repertoire related to that year’s production. Last year we went to see the Lion King.
The choir rehearses on a Tuesday from 4-5pm in the school hall and is under the direction of Hannah Masterson who is the Music teacher at Cluny.
Date for the Diary: The Carol service is on Thursday 15th December.
Orchestra
The orchestra is comprised of students from every year group and is open to music and non-music students alike regardless of level or experience.
The orchestra welcomes students who play brass, string, woodwind, percussion or keyboard instruments. The repertoire of the orchestra is arranged to suit the level of each individual player to give each member the chance to express their musicality according to her ability. The orchestra performs at school events throughout the year, including the carol service. Rehearsals will be during school in the lead up to the carol service.
The TY Musical
The Cluny School Musical takes place at the end of January and is a highlight of Transition Year in Cluny. The musical gives every student an opportunity to develop, and in many cases discover their stage/musical talents.
Every student in Transition Year participates in performing on stage and as such it is a major collaborative project where the students work hard together and learn something about themselves and others in what it takes to produce a large-scale project.
At its core, the musical is a lot of fun. But it also develops character, unearths talent and builds confidence. The students get to experience what it is like to perform with a professional live band, sound engineer and lighting technician. There is also a lot of collaboration between the art (set design) and music departments which engages the students in interesting cross-curricular activities.
And of course, the transitions years experience performing their show over three nights and also stage a matinee performance for our local primary schools.
Last years hugely successful and sold-out production was “Grease” and this year the TY’s are set to start rehearsals very soon for their upcoming show “The School of Rock”.
Date for the Diary: The School of Rock will take place on January 24 - 26 2023.
