Welcome back to our latest edition of Good News Friday, covering stories from the past week at Cluny.

Our Cluny polytunnel is starting to fill up with herbs, tomato plants, lots of seedlings, a kiwi tree and we now have some fig trees. This week, we also planted strawberry plants and Ms. Larney explained how the plants produce runners for propagation.

Mrs. Wolahan showed students where to find cones which we will use to make Autumn wreaths. Martin has installed a water butt so we can harvest the rainwater for our polytunnel!

Senior home economics students had a tour of a working mill! They then collected freshly milled flour to make their own loaf of delicious bread. Of course, they also got a chance to taste the bread with a nice cup of tea. A most enjoyable tour.

This week we held a special themed week in the library on the topic of Cloud Forests. These are a rare forest environment found across the world which are home to numerous unique species of plants and animals. These biomes are in danger of disappearing and so through this themed week, we hoped to raise awareness for them. A star of the week was a pitcher plant to be seen in the library, a carnivorous plant which students got to see and learn about.

Mr. Geraghty’s first Year Home Economics group gave short-crust pastry sausage rolls a try this week in their practical class. Great work by one and all.

On Tuesday, we highlighted World Mental Health Day by holding a drop everything and read event for all staff and students. To assist in getting ready, our librarian also set up a pop-up library in the school foyer! Happy reading!

Students in second year recently enjoyed their second-year retreat.

Our Inktober competition is continuing to run, well done to all students who are continuing to take part. This week’s theme was candle! Next week’s theme is Moon. As always, students can drop their submissions into the library before Friday. Winners will be announced after the completion of the Inktober period.

Don't forget to bring in your shoeboxes for the Team Hope shoebox appeal. All boxes must be in the week of the 23rd of October.

The Oireachtas Essay Competition is now open and accepting entries from fifth and sixth year Leaving Certificate students on the topic of “Parliamentary Politics Matters for Peace”. For more information, please visit: https://buff.ly/45t71hF

Next week, we will be hosting a coffee morning in aid of Blackrock Hospice in association with Bewley's. All are invited to join us! It will take place on Friday, 20th October from 11:00 until 13:00. Entry is 5 euro. We are looking forward to welcoming you all to Cluny.

Next Thursday, we will also have our whole school photography day.

That is all for this week! And remember, at Cluny, we celebrate the days to come!
