Music in The School

Orchestra

The Cluny school orchestra is comprised of students from every year group. It is open to music and non-music students alike regardless of level or experience.

The orchestra welcomes students who play brass, string, woodwind, percussion or keyboard instruments. The repertoire of the orchestra is arranged to suit the level of each individual player to give each member the chance to express their musicality according to her ability.

The orchestra rehearses once per week and performs at school events throughout the year, including the carol service.

The repertoire of the orchestra includes John Williams’ Somewhere In My Memory, I Dreamed A Dream from Les Miserables, a selection of traditional Irish arrangements, such as Maidrín Rúa, and light classical favourites such as The Blue Danube.

Choir

The St. Joseph of Cluny school choir is open to every student in the school with a desire to sing. No previous choral or musical experience is necessary. The choir is the heart beat of the school and it provides the students with an opportunity to sing and make friends with girls from other years and to excel in a co-curricular activity.

The choir gives each student confidence-building opportunities as it performs at most school events throughout the year. The choir performs at the school mass, at Open Day and the Carol Service, one of the highlights of the year.

The choir also takes part in national competitions, such as The Wesley Interschools Music Festival, and sings Christmas Carols in the local community.

The repertoire of the choir includes a vast selection of Christmas Carols and sacred music. Contemporary classical music is also popular with the choir and they have performed Vaughan-Williams’ Silent Noon and Eric Whitacre’s The Seal Lullaby.

Every year, the choir attends a show in the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre and learns repertoire related to that year’s production. Recent popular works performed by the choir include medleys from Sister Act, The Sound of Music and Les Miserables.

TY Musical

The Cluny School Musical takes place in the last week of term in October and is a highlight of Transition Year in Cluny. The musical gives every student an opportunity to develop, and in many cases discover, their stage/musical talents. Every student in Transition Year participates in performing on stage and as such it is a major collaborative project where the students work hard together and learn something about themselves and others in what it takes to produce a large-scale project. At its core, the musical is a lot of fun. But it also develops character, unearths talent and builds confidence. The students get to experience what it is like to perform with a professional live band, sound engineer and lighting technician. There is also a lot of collaboration between the art (set design) and music departments which engages the students in interesting cross-curricular activities. And of course, the transitions years experience performing their show over three nights and also stage a matinee performance for our local primary schools.
